With a little help from your friends at Cosmetique!

BEAUTY BLUNDER #1 :  Applying your makeup with dirty brushes...

WHY THIS IS "POSITIVELY MAD":  Using dirty brushes to apply makeup means you're transferring bacteria, dirt and pore-clogging oils onto your skin every time you use them!  This can cause acne, dullness and premature aging of the skin.  It's also bad for your brushes!

QUICK FIX:  Use a gentle hair shampoo to lather up brushes once a week.  Be sure to massage bristles from base to tip, and rinse thoroughly.  Reshape brushes and allow to dry flat on a clean paper towel.  Don't you just feel better?

EXPERT PICK:  Try Garden Botanika Fresh Mint Shampoo for a refreshing scent and luxe lather that conditions as it cleanses.

BEAUTY BLUNDER #2:  Poorly-blended foundation...

WHY THIS IS "POSITIVELY MAD":  Poorly-blended foundation sets the stage for poorly-applied makeup!  Just as an artist begins with a perfectly primed canvas, applying your foundation like a pro will ensure an even, smooth surface on which to perform your magic.

QUICK FIX:  For expertly-blended foundation with no streaks, caking or mask-like lines at the jaw, ear and forehead, choose a natural-looking, semi-sheer foundation with a brush applicator.  The lightweight formula and brush application allow for perfectly-natural, perfectly-YOU coverage, with no tell-tale lines or streaking.  Tap a damp sponge over foundation after application to blend and remove any excess product.  Step back and take a look in the mirror... OMG!  It's Complexion Perfection!!!

EXPERT PICK :  Too Faced Magic Wand Foundation has a built-in brush and delivers light-diffusing, skin-perfecting coverage for perfectly natural-looking skin!

BEAUTY BLUNDER #3:  Skipping the eyelash curler...

WHY THIS IS "POSITIVELY MAD":  Uncurled lashes appear shorter and make your eyes look smaller and less awake.  Curled lashes look longer and fuller, and give eyes a well-rested, alert appearance.  Because curled lashes allow more light into the eye area, eyes appear brighter and sparklier!  What girl can say no to that?!?!

QUICK FIX:  Use a high-quality, stainless steel eyelash curler with a no-stick silicone pad to curl lashes at the base, mid-way point,  and tips for eye-opening lashes that look ultra-long and flirty!  Be sure to follow with mascara for maximum impact.

EXPERT PICK:  Japonesque Power Curl Eyelash Curler creates dramatic, uniform curl with no sticking, clumping or pinching.

BEAUTY BLUNDER #4:  Too-Nude Lips...

WHY THIS IS "POSITIVELY MAD":  While rich, warm nudes can lend subtle sophistication to an otherwise edgy, smoky eye;  too-nude, too-light lips can sap skin of vital color and make the complexion look sallow and ashy.

QUICK FIX:  Banish lackluster lips and embrace this season's hottest trend!  A shade which flatters many women AND is appropriate for all ages, coral is THE color for lips this spring.  A moisturizing, color-rich lipstick formula ensures high-impact, lip-loving pigments that last and last.  Be sure to choose a shade appropriate for your skin tone.  Fairer-skinned gals should stick with pinkish hues while those with deeper skin tones can experiment with bolder, warmer shades.

EXPERT PICK:  For a stay-true, stay-put lip color in a universally-flattering shade of this season's hottest hue, try Sistina Lipcolor Perfetta in Mandarino Coral.

BEAUTY BLUNDER #5:  Heading to bed without washing your face...

WHY THIS IS "POSITIVELY MAD":  Leaving makeup, dirt and oil on your face while you sleep clogs pores and creates a breeding ground for germs and bacteria which can exacerbate acne conditions, cause eye infections, and leave skin looking dull.  What's more, by not cleansing skin properly before bed, you allow the free radicals from the day to sit on skin overnight, potentially contributing to cell damage and premature aging.

QUICK FIX:  First remove eye makeup and lip products using a makeup remover designed especially for those delicate areas.  Now, using circular motions, massage a gentle cleansing gel onto wet skin for 30-60 seconds to remove makeup and impurities without drying your complexion.  Be sure to rinse cleanser off thoroughly with water and pat dry.

EXPERT PICK(S):  Beat hard-to-remove eye and lip colors with Arabella Stuart Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes and Lips.  Follow with Princess Livia Gentle Cleansing Gel with Bee Pollen to unclog pores, and remove excess oil and impurities.

Staying Power: Great Tips for Looks That Last!

Ever spend an incredibly long time on your hair and makeup only to discover at the end of the night that your look has fallen flat?  It's hard enough figuring out just the right hairstyle and makeup look to wear to a party without having to worry that your hair's drooping, your face looks like an oil-slick and your eyes look like those of a raccoon.  This is why I've put together these stay-put tips for makeup and hair that look just as beautiful on the way home as they did on the way out!

Use a foundation primer.

I know I've said it before and I'll say it again now: Primers are extremely useful because they create an important barrier between your skin and your makeup.  This allows your foundation to wear perfectly because it isn't disturbed by any activity on the skin's surface.  Foundation will apply more smoothly and last longer than you ever dreamed possible!  Try Pur Minerals Colour Correcting Primer in Peach for a flattering, skin-enhancing glow.

Use an eyeshadow primer.

Perhaps this seems repetitive, I mean, a primer's a primer, right?  Well, yes and no...  An eyeshadow primer is designed specifically to be used on the delicate eye area and will help to keep both cream and powder shadows from creasing.  It also ensures that your shadows don't lose impact over time.  I like Too Faced Shadow Insurance for long-lasting eye makeup looks.

Apply powder eyeshadow on top of liquid and pencil eyeliners.
This trick sets eyeliner so it's on for the long haul!  You'll be absolutely amazed at how effective this is.  You can match the shadow to the eyeliner for a seamless look or add a pop of color to spice things up a bit.    Either way, you need a small, angled brush to apply powder shadow flawlessly over your pencil or liquid liner.  Japonesque Angled Brow Definer Brush allows you to apply just the right amount of product and creates very little "fallout."

Make friends with powder.

You may have heard that powder absorbs light, robbing you of your dewy, glowing complexion.  The first part is true...  You do want to use powder sparingly, and heed its placement if you're going for dewy-looking skin.  Sequester powder and it's light-sapping properties to your t-zone for the most dimensional look.  For maximum staying power, however, I recommend a light but thorough dusting of powder over the entire face.  For a more natural, glowing finish, try Arabella Stuart Candlelight Finishing Powder.  Its subtle sheen will add dimension that other powders don't.  Although skin may look a bit flat initially, you'll find that over time your natural oils will begin to come through and return your skin to it's glow-y state.  The best part?  This application will stay perfect all night long.

Layer powder blush over cream versions.

Cream blushes can give beautiful color and depth to cheeks and are easy to blend.  By applying a thin veil of translucent powder over cream blush, followed by a powder blush, you've created a look that will really go the distance.  In addition, the layering of products creates a more dimensional effect.  Too Faced Brightening Blushes give great color without making skin look flat.

Give styling mousse a try.

I was hesitant to put mousse in my hair at first...  I avoid hair spray like the plague and am typically very skeptical of hair products in general.  Because I hate sticky, stiff-feeling hair, I use very little "holding" product in my hair.  One exception I make is mousse.  A good, soft-hold mousse gives weightless, touchable shape to your style without feeling "product-y."  Apply mousse to damp hair from roots to tips and style as usual.  You'll be pleased with your hairstyle's new found longevity.

Take it easy on the eye cream.

Mascara smudging on you?  One of the main culprits is eye cream.  Incorrect application of eye cream can cause a whole host of eye makeup snafus.  Be sure to apply eye cream at least 15 minutes before you begin your makeup routine.  Also, avoid getting it on lashes - this can keep mascara from going on properly and result in mid-evening smudging and flaking.  Still having problems?  Try an eye gel.  These can be just as hydrating, and they tend to absorb more quickly than heavier creams.  I love Princess Livia Soothing Eye Gel with Bee Pollen.  It soaks in instantly and creates a heavenly cooling sensation that always makes me feel more awake.

Fill in lips with lip liner.

Although you've likely heard this one before, it bears repeating.  Your lips will look better for a longer period of time if you fill them in entirely with a lip liner before applying lipstick or gloss.  Not only does lip liner help to keep lipstick and/or gloss in place, but it also ensures that should your lipstick come off over the course of your evening, you will NOT be left with that dreaded ring-around-the-mouth!  Try it.  It works.  I like Jean-Michelle Stylo Pour Levres Duo - Double-Ended.  It has two great neutral shades and stays right where you put it!

Layer your fragrances.

Finally found your favorite scent?  Feel like it has disappeared by the end of the evening?  Get fragrance that lasts by layering different versions of the same scent.  Invest in the coordinating body lotion or oil for your favorite fragrance and apply it immediately after bathing.  Once your lotion/oil has absorbed into the skin, spritz or dab the perfume/eau de toilette onto pulse points for maximum payoff.  These points include wrists, throat and backs of knees.

There you have it.  My best tips and tricks for longer-lasting beauty.  Armed with these easy, stay-put techniques, you have the power to make your exit just as glamorous as your entrance.

Happy Holidays from your friends at Cosmetique!

Apply Foundation Like a Pro: 6 Easy Steps to Gorgeous Looking Skin

What woman doesn't fantasize about having perfect skin?  It is the holy grail of the beauty world and is practically unattainable.  What we can do is fake it with makeup.  This is why women go out and spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars trying every foundation under the sun.  All the foundations in the world won't give you perfect-looking skin if you are not taking the appropriate steps to prep your face for makeup.  It also doesn't do you any good to apply foundation if you don't set it properly and it ends up wearing off within minutes.

This is why I've put together this 6-step regimen to give you gorgeous looking skin every time.  6 steps may seem like a lot, but wait till you see the finished product!

1.  Exfoliate

This may be the MOST important step of all.  Exfoliation allows all of the rest of the products to do their jobs properly.  Removing dirt and dead skin cells not only reveals fresher, newer skin, it also allows for increased penetration of skin care products.  Not to mention that makeup will apply oh-so-much better to your freshly exfoliated face.  It is a MUST for great-looking skin.  Try: Princess Livia Honey and Almond Scrub

2. Moisturize

Hydrating your skin prior to makeup application is also an important step.  Hydrated skin looks smoother, plumper and has a radiant glow.  It also aids in a nice, smooth makeup application.  Try: Jean-Michelle Lotion Peau Brillante

3. Prime

Painters don't apply paint to an unprimed canvas and neither should you.  A good primer will prepare your skin for a flawless makeup application.  Primers can color-correct, mattify and even tone and texture.  By forming a delicate barrier, they also allow the makeup to sit on the surface of your skin rather than sinking into fine lines and reacting with your skin's natural oils.  Try: Pur Minerals Color Correcting Primer in Peach

4. Apply foundation

The right foundation should even tone and texture and minimize flaws while allowing your natural skin to show through.  You'll find that after completing steps 1-3, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well your foundation applies.  For best results, begin in the middle of your face and blend outward towards the perimeter.  Try: Jean-Michelle Claire Teint Anti-Age Liquid Makeup

5. Apply concealer

Now that you've applied your foundation, you want to go back and cover any imperfections that are still visible.  This includes blemishes, under eye circles and redness.  Typically, a little concealer goes a long way so use it sparingly.  For the best coverage, pat the concealer onto desired areas and pat the edges to blend if needed.  Try: Diandra Perfect Blend Concealer Duo

6. Apply powder

Unless shine is a big problem for you, it's best to apply powder sparingly.  Its main function is simply to set the makeup you've just applied.  Using a large fluffy brush, dust a translucent powder over your entire face making sure to cover all areas where you've applied foundation.  Try: Too Faced Absolutely Invisible Translucent Powder

Now that you've got the perfect canvas, think of all the fun you're going to have trying all of the fabulous new fall and winter shades!

Get This Look: Beauty in Bloom

Spring is upon us, and with it comes more sunshine, longer, lazier days, and more saturated, brilliant color!  Our theme for May is "Beauty in Bloom," and with that in mind, I've put together a bright, colorful and easy-to-achieve makeup look.  By following the face chart along with the instructions, you'll find you have no trouble executing this beautiful Spring/Summer makeup application.

Face:

Start with Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation with SPF 15 to even out your complexion so your eyes really stand out.

For the most natural look, use Japonesque Powder Brush to apply this wonder-powder to your t-zone, blending outward.

Eyes:

Now, it’s time to break out Too Faced Liquif-Eye Kit so your eyes can really “bloom!” This amazing palette has 12 gorgeous, highly pigmented shadows to choose from. It also comes with Liquif-Eye, so you can use any shadow as eye liner!

To achieve this colorful eye makeup look, begin by applying the violet shadow to your entire lid, blending up slightly past your crease, using Japonesque Medium Eye Shadow Fluff Brush.

Next, line your eyes using Liquif-Eye with the bright turquoise shadow. Be sure to line all the way around both the inner and outer corners of your eyes, pulling the color up onto the lid a bit on the outer corners. You’ll happily discover that when you use Liquif-Eye the colors show up even more vividly on the skin.

(Tip: For a softer look, skip Liquif-Eye and apply the turquoise shadow using Japonesque Angled Brow Definer Brush.
Now apply your favorite mascara (I like Too Faced Lash Injection in Black,) and take a look at your “bloomin’” fabulous eyes!

Cheeks:

For the cheeks we just need to add enough color to warm up the complexion. Use Arabella Stuart Duo Blusher in Two Sonnets for just the right effect.

Mix the two colors together and apply to the contours of your cheeks as well as the apples, starting at your ears.

Lips:

Princess Livia Define and Shine Lipcolor in Pink Cloud will give you just the right amount of color.
Use the pencil to outline your lips and lightly shade them in for a soft well-blended look.

Now coat them with the gloss (it is THE perfect pink,) and you’re all set!

Try this look at home and let us know how it turns out by leaving a comment.

Get Sarah Jessica Parker's Glamorous Oscar Look

Sarah Jessica Parker looked absolutely stunning at this year’s Academy Awards. I loved the makeup, the hair, and the dress! The good news is, we can all get this super-special occasion look with the right products and application. I’ve broken the look down by facial feature and recommended products for re-creating this gorgeous party-perfect face!

Face:

Using the Japonesque Foundation Brush, apply Diandra Perfect Blend Foundation which is a silky, cream-to-powder formula perfect for achieving perfect-looking skin!

To further perfect your “canvas,” use your ring finger to spot-conceal blemishes and under-eye circles with Sistina Tinta Naturale Concealer.

Cheeks:

For SJP’s tawny-cheeked look all you need is a little bronzer! Sistina Crème Bronzing Veil is perfect for re-creating this look because it adds color along with a luminous glow. Again, use your ring finger to apply this creamy bronzer high on the apples of your cheeks.

Eyes:

The eyes are really the focal point of her makeup look here, so let’s glam it up! Start with the Jean-Michelle Quartette Lumineux Eyeshadow in Golden Fantaisie to create warmth and depth on the lid.

Use the Japonesque Medium Eyeshadow Fluff Brush to dust the ivory shade onto brow bones for a subtle highlight.
Now, let’s add some drama! Apply the dark, warm brown in the compact to lids only using the Japonesque Small Eye Detailer Brush. Color should be darkest at the lash line.

Use the Japonesque Eyeshadow Crease Brush to apply the medium golden peach shadow in the crease to create a subtle blend between the lid and brow colors.

Line the lower lash line by dipping the Japonesque Angled Brow Definer Brush into the dark, warm brown and gently stroking it under lashes from outer corners all the way into the inner corners of your eyes.

To get the uber-defined smolder of this eye, use Jean-Michelle Le Stylo Pour Les Yeux in Noir to line the upper and lower lash line. For your lower lash line, apply the pencil just inside of where you lined with the powder shadow and make sure to line all the way around your tear duct (inner corners) for maximum impact.

Thoroughly curl those lashes using the best eyelash curler ever! The Japonesque Power Curl Eyelash Curler! You won’t believe the difference this makes…

Now put on a generous coat of Too Faced’s Lash Injection in Pitch Black for huge sweeping lashes.

Lips:
I really like her lip color in this photo…it’s nude without being boring or washing her out. Try lining lips with Princess Livia Lipliner in Spice for definition. Lightly fill in your lips with the pencil for added depth and staying power.
Next, apply Princess Livia Performance Slimline Lipstick in Coral Sunset for a beautiful, moisturizing pop of color.

To achieve SJP’s high-shine look, top your lipstick with Too Faced Lip Injection. This awesome gloss imparts magnificent shine while plumping your pout!
